Thailand's PM Abhisit Vejjajiva monitors voting result through screen after debate at parliament in Bangkok, 21 Mar 2009

The Thai government easily survived a no-confidence vote Saturday following a two-day debate on corruption allegations against top political figures including the prime minister and Cabinet members.

The opposition Puea Thai party, which is aligned with ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, accused Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and several of his ministers of corruption and mismanagement.

Puea Thai forced several votes in parliament, including a censure motion against the prime minister, but each motion was voted down by at least 53 votes.

Other issues raised in the debate included questions over Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya's ties to anti-government protesters who seized control of Bangkok's two airports late last year.

Kasit publicly supported the People's Alliance for Democracy during their takeover of the airports as part of a broader public protest against the pro-Thaksin government in power at the time.

Another opposition motion accused Mr. Abhisit's ruling Democrat Party of accepting numerous illegal donations.

Mr. Thaksin was ousted from office in 2006 in a bloodless military coup.  Since then, Thai politics have largely been in a state of turmoil.
