East Timor Holds Presential Election

East Timor held its second presidential election on Saturday since winning its independence from Indonesia in May of 2002.

Although 11 candidates are challenging incumbent president and Nobel Peace laureate Jose Ramos-Horta, the election is expected to be a three-way contest, with Francisco Guterres from the main opposition Fretilin party and Jose Maria de Vasconcelos, the former army chief, seen as standing the best chance of going on to a runoff in mid-April.

A second round of balloting between the two top vote winners will be held if no one wins a majority. Election results are expected late Saturday.
