Quakes Rattle Tokyo, Northeastern Japan

A series of earthquakes sent jitters through Tokyo and northeast Japan late Wednesday, but caused no apparent damage or injury.

Seismologists say the first quake, a 6.8 magnitude temblor off Hokkaido island, struck some 700 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. Authorities lifted all tsunami advisories about 90 minutes later.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the 5.7 earthquake felt in Tokyo was centered 90 kilometers east of the capital at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Sunday marked the one year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated coastal northeastern Japan, killing nearly 20-thousand people.
