Syria: Homs military attacks continue say activists

Syrian military forces have resumed attacks in the city of Homs, killing at least two people there, activists say.

Tanks have shelled part of the city, a day after 20 people were said to have been killed in military action, the activists report.

Anti-government protesters have taken to the streets again in several cities, following Friday prayers.

They say they want to test an agreement by the Syrian authorities to pull military forces out of urban areas.

The deal was announced on Wednesday by the Arab League, along with other measures agreed to by the government in Damascus.

There has been no sign so far that the security forces are being withdrawn, but Syrian state TV has announced an amnesty for anti-government fighters.

"The interior ministry invites those who carry arms, who sold them, distributed them, bought them or financed their purchase and who have not committed any murder to turn themselves in and surrender their weapons to the nearest police station," it said.

Homs has been a focus of opposition to President Bashar al-Assad since the uprising against him began in March.

The killings reported on Thursday were mostly in the Baba Amr district, which is said to have come under heavy bombardment.

Medical officials at the main hospital in Homs told the BBC that more than 100 bodies had arrived in the past two days.

Video footage from the city purported to show tanks opening fire in a built-up area.

However, journalists are unable to move around freely in Syria and information is hard to verify.

'Killings continue'

Activists say at least two people were shot dead by the security forces in Homs on Friday.

They say two others were killed further south near the city of Deraa.

Protests have also been reported in the capital Damascus as well as in Hama, Latakia and other smaller cities.

The Arab League announced on Wednesday that the Syrian government had agreed to begin a dialogue with the opposition within two weeks.

Officials in Damascus said they would release all political prisoners and allow journalists and rights groups to monitor the situation.

Opposition groups in Syria accused Mr Assad's government of trying to buy itself time.
