NATO Says Air Mission Will Continue in Libya

French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet says the NATO air campaign in Libya will continue as long as there are pockets of resistance, and until the provisional government asks for the airstrikes to end.

He spoke Thursday in Brussels, where NATO defense ministers have been evaluating the Libya mission as part of a two-day meeting.

Longuet said capturing former leader Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte would be symbolic, but areas of resistance still remain in Bani Walid and areas of the south.

Meanwhile, street-fighting continued in Sirte on Thursday as National Transitional Government fighters try to strengthen their positions in the town, located about 360 kilometers east of Tripoli.

Libyan military officials said their forces could capture Sirte within days. NTC leaders have vowed to step down after the city is secured and the country's liberation is declared.

Also on Thursday, a security chief in Tripoli says provisional government forces have discovered two mass graves in the capital region containing a total of about 900 bodies.

The security chief told reporters Wednesday the graves contained “victims of the old regime.” He did not elaborate on when he thought the victims may have died.
