A Hong Kong-based human rights group says veteran Chinese dissident Zhu Yufu has been formally charged with subversion after posting an online essay in support of a call for Middle East-style protests in China.

The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said Wednesday that Zhu is being held at a detention center in his hometown of Hangzhou. It said the 59-year-old, who has spent nine of the past 12 years in prison for pro-democracy activities, has been formally charged with subverting state power.

Dozens of known dissidents have been detained or disappeared since mid-February, when a series of mysterious online postings began to call for Chinese protests modeled on the peaceful uprisings that toppled governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

Another rights group, Chinese Human Rights Defenders, says activist Wei Qiang was sentenced earlier this month to two years in a labor re-education camp after attending one such rally. Reuters news agency identified Wei as a former art student who has worked at the studio of detained artist Ai Weiwei.

Western governments have protested the arrest of Ai, one of China's most famous artists, who was seized this month while trying to board a flight to Hong Hong. China says he is being investigated for economic crimes including tax irregularities.
