US Government Budget Talks Reach Final Hours

The contentious debate over a 2011 budget for the U.S. government remained unresolved Friday, with a government shutdown at the end of the day a possibility.

Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid said Democratic and Republican negotiators had agreed on $38 billion in cuts in the spending plan for the fiscal year ending in September. But Reid said a dispute over a proposed Republican ban on federal spending for the family planning group, Planned Parenthood, which provides abortion services, is blocking an overall compromise.

The top House Republican, Speaker John Boehner, told reporters in a brief statement that negotiators do not have an agreement yet, but they are "close." He said that if the two political parties do not agree on significant budget cuts, it would signal that Washington is "not serious" about trimming the government＇s burgeoning budget deficit. He said nothing about the dispute over the Planned Parenthood funding.
