Bahraini security forces have opened fire at opposition activists attending the funeral of a man killed in a crackdown on pro-reform protests, killing another protester.

Witnesses say the second activist was killed Tuesday, when police moved to break up the crowd gathering for the funeral outside a hospital in the Bahraini capital, Manama.

The first man was killed Monday as Bahraini security forces raided Shi'ite villages across the island nation to disperse rallies by hundreds of anti-government activists inspired by recent uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. At least 20 other people were wounded in that unrest.

Opposition groups used social media websites to declare Monday as a "Day of Rage" to protest what they see as a lack of democratic reform by the nation's minority Sunni rulers.

Bahrain's interior ministry offered condolences to the family of the man killed on Monday. It also promised to investigate his death and prosecute anyone who used "unjustified" force against the protesters.

Bahraini opposition activists timed the protests to coincide with the 10th anniversary of a national referendum on political reforms proposed by King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa.  The activists say those reforms have failed to deliver the greater political rights and freedoms that they seek.

Bahrain's majority Shi'ite community also has long complained of discrimination under the constitutional monarchy led by the al-Khalifa family.

Bahrain's rulers have tried to ease public grievances in recent weeks by offering $2,600 in cash to all families and promising to loosen state controls on the media.
