Protesters from opposition parties and labor unions shout anti-government slogans in Amman, January 28, 2011

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Jordan, calling for government reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Samir al-Rifai.

Chanting demonstrators marched through the capital, Amman, and several other cities on Friday.

Opposition supporters in the country have carried out a string of protests over the past week, similar to those in Tunisia that led to this month's ouster of the country's former president.

Jordanians have been demanding relief from high food prices and have also accused the government of failing to fight corruption.

Protests have continued in spite of a pledge from Prime Minister Rifai, earlier this month, to raise the salaries of government workers and increase pensions for government retirees.
