Niger Postpones Local Elections

Election officials in Niger have postponed municipal and regional elections for three days because of logistical problems.

The elections, which were scheduled for Saturday, will now take place on Tuesday.

The head of the electoral commission, Ghousmane Abdourahmane, told reporters Thursday that ballot papers and other election materials have not reached some polling stations.

The elections are meant to be the next step back to civilian rule in the west African country.

The military toppled President Mamadou Tanjda last February, after the president forced through constitutional changes to extend his rule and expand his powers.

In October, voters approved a new constitution that gives the military until April 6 to restore civilian rule.

The country is scheduled to hold a presidential election on January 31.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
