Iraqi authorities say a double suicide bombing near a provincial government compound in the western city of Ramadi has killed at least nine people and wounded about 50 others.

Officials say a suicide bomber detonated a minibus packed with explosives at an intersection near the offices of the Anbar provincial administration.

They say a second bomber disguised as a policeman blew himself up minutes later in a crowd of people who were trying to help the victims of the first blast.

The casualties included policemen, women and children. The use of secondary bombings to catch bystanders and rescue personnel is a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.   

Monday＇s attack was the fourth to be carried out near the Ramadi compound housing Anbar＇s provincial government since December 2009.

Anbar was a stronghold of Sunni insurgents after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, but many tribesmen switched sides in 2006, helping U.S. and Iraqi forces to improve security in the province.

The last attack outside the Ramadi compound happened on December 12, when a suicide car bomber killed at least 13 people.

A female suicide bomber also blew herself up at a reception room in July, while a bombing in December 2009 wounded Anbar＇s governor.
