Chinese PM on Trust, Trade Mission in India

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao writes an India-China friendship message during a visit to a school in New Delhi, India, 15 Dec. 2010.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is in India on a trip aimed at building trust between the two rising economic powers.
Arriving in New Delhi Wednesday accompanied by a delegation of more than 300 business officials, Mr. Wen said India and China have made much bilateral progress and have established a partnership oriented toward peace and prosperity. Joint efforts by both sides will lead to a beneficial situation in the future, said Wen.
The two sides are expected to sign a number of deals on banking, energy and infrastructure.
Trade has been booming between the two countries and is expected to reach $60 billion this year. However, India is unhappy with its growing trade deficit with China and is pushing for greater access to Chinese markets.
The trade imbalance is likely to come up when Wen meets with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday. The two also are expected to discuss a territorial dispute over a shared border that remains unresolved despite years of negotiations.
Another historic strain on Indian-Chinese relations is the presence in India of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
Wen's visit to India follows similar, business-focused trips by U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. From New Delhi, Wen will continue to Pakistan, India's biggest rival.
