US President Barack Obama delivers his weekly radio, TV and Internet address, 13 Nov 2010

U.S. President Barack Obama has appealed to Congress to reel in spending as the country tries to slow the mounting deficit.

In his weekly address Saturday, Mr. Obama said the country cannot afford to earmark money for all special projects in the home districts of lawmakers.

But, he opposes an outright ban on earmarks, saying some have legitimate benefits to communities.

Republican leaders say their members in the House of Representative will vote next week for a ban on spending for pet projects, and challenged Mr. Obama to urge Democrats to hold a similar vote.

In the Republican weekly address, Representative Greg Walden says their priorities for the new legislative session beginning in January include job creation, cutting spending, and making Congressional proceedings more transparent to the public.
