Israeli police have arrested 10 people after a protest by Israeli ultranationalists sparked clashes between residents and police in the northern Arab town of Umm al-Fahm.

Arab residents waved Palestinian flags, set tires on fire and threw rocks Wednesday at hundreds of police officers who had been sent to prevent violence during the protest by at least 20 right-wing Israeli activists.

Police responded by firing tear gas.  Several people were wounded during the clashes.

Umm al-Fahm is one of Israel's largest Arab towns and is home to the northern branch of the Islamic Movement led by Sheikh Raed Salah, a supporter of the militant group Hamas.

The Israeli activists said they want the Islamic Movement banned.  Some shouted "Death to terrorists."  Witnesses say they also shouted "Death to Arabs."

Umm al-Fahm officials called their protest a provocation.

The protesters were marking the 20th anniversary of the murder of Meir Kahane, a U-S.-born rabbi who preached that Arabs should be expelled from Israel and the West Bank.  Kahane was shot and killed by an Arab gunman in New York.

Kahane's Kach party was banned by Israel for inciting racism.

Israeli police officials had opposed the march, but Israel's High Court ordered them to authorize it earlier this year.

Separately, Palestinian medics say an Israeli tank shell killed an Islamic Jihad militant in the Gaza Strip, Wednesday.  Israeli military officials say the incident took place after security forces identified two "suspects" in the area.
