Obama Says Tax Code Changes Promote Jobs in US

US President Barack Obama records the weekly address, 15 Oct 2010


U.S. President Barack Obama is appealing to Congress again to close tax loopholes that he says give companies tax breaks while sending jobs overseas.

In his weekly address Saturday, Mr. Obama said tax breaks should be for companies creating new jobs in the United States, and keeping existing ones in the country.

The president said Republicans have fought to keep lucrative tax loopholes open, costing taxpayers billions of dollars.

In the weekly Republican response, Representative Mike Pence of Indiana called for an extension of the tax cuts of former President George W. Bush, which Democrats oppose.

Democratic leaders in Congress say the tax issue will be taken up after the November 2 mid-term election.
