Israeli Court Chides Irish Nobel Peace Laureate for Pro-Gaza Remarks

An Israeli Supreme Court judge accused an Irish Nobel peace prize winner of spreading "propaganda" during a hearing on Monday.

The rebuke took place after Nobel laureate Mairead Maguire accused Israel of being an "apartheid" state and called for an end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

The 66-year-old Maguire was appealing a lower court ruling banning her from the country for 10 years.  Israel banned Maguire for taking part in an aid flotilla that tried to breach a naval blockade on its way to Gaza in June.

The Nobel laureate claims she did not know about the ban when she landed at the Tel Aviv airport on Tuesday to meet with peace activists.  The court is considering whether to allow Maguire to stay long enough to complete her work.

Maguire won the Nobel peace prize in 1976 for organizing a peace movement in Northern Ireland to end sectarian violence and promote reconciliation.
