Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in Iran, where he has held talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on a wide range of issues.

Syria's state-run SANA news agency says the leaders on Saturday discussed continued cooperation between the two countries in investments and trade as well as expanding regional economic cooperation.

The news agency says President Assad reiterated the "right of all countries" to have a peaceful use of nuclear energy, after President Ahmadinejad briefed him on Iran's nuclear program.  The United Nations and some world powers have imposed sanctions on Iran because of its controversial nuclear program.

SANA says the two leaders also discussed peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.  It says both leaders affirmed that Israel's West Bank settlement expansions and blockade of Gaza show what they called the "falsehood of Israel's claim" that it wants to achieve peace.

Mr. Assad and Mr. Ahmadinejad expressed support for Iraq and its efforts to form a new government after March elections yielded inconclusive results.  Earlier this week, former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi visited Syria, where he discussed Iraq's political status.

Mr. Allawi's bloc received the most parliamentary seats in March voting.  But his strongest rival, current Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, has received support from a Shiite political alliance.

The Syrian president is set to meet with Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian state media reports say trade between Iran and Syria is valued at $3 billion and is expected to reach $5 billion in the near future.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
