Obama, Republicans Argue Job Growth
VOA News 31 July 2010
U.S. President Barack Obama says America's small business owners need new tax breaks and lending assistance to help them expand and hire new people.
In his weekly address Saturday, Mr. Obama rebuked Republicans in the Senate for blocking legislation called the Small Business Jobs Act, which he said has been praised by national business organizations as being good for business.
But in the Republicans' response, Senator Mike Johanns countered that the new health care reform law backed by the president will cost small businesses additional time, paperwork, and money. He said such policies deter small businesses from hiring new employees, lest they encounter what he called "a flurry of new taxes and regulations."
On Friday, Mr. Obama made a speech in the auto-manufacturing city of Detroit, Michigan, where he called the $60 billion bailout of the country's auto industry a success and said U.S. carmakers are "coming back."
He said investment in the industry has saved more than 1 million jobs, and that for the first time since 2004 the top three U.S. car companies - General Motors, Ford and Chrysler - are operating at a profit.
But Mr. Obama also said many of the 334,000 jobs eliminated after GM and Chrysler declared bankruptcy been lost for good.
