Russian, US Spies Swapped at Vienna Airport

The largest spy swap since the end of the cold war has taken place in Vienna where 14 convicted spies from Russia and the United States were exchanged early Friday.

A U.S. flight carrying 10 deported Russian agents parked next to a Russian plane carrying four Russians, convicted of spying for the United States. Shortly afterwards the 14 were exchanged and the planes took off for undisclosed locations.  

The Russian agents had been deported from the U.S. late Thursday after pleading guilty to conspiring to work as unregistered foreign agents.  The four Russian men, who had been convicted of spying for the U.S. were pardoned by Russian President Dimitri Medvedev before being sent to Vienna.  At least one of the four Russian prisoners has said he is innocent.   

The U.S. State Department said in a statement that no significant national security benefit would have been gained from the prolonged incarceration in the U.S. of the 10 agents. The U.S. also said it took advantage of the opportunity to secure the release of the four men serving lengthy prison sentences in Russia, saying some were in poor health.

Among the conditions of their release, the 10 Russian agents must never try to return to the United States.

Lawyers for some of the suspects say their clients admitted knowing they were breaking the law - living in the United States under assumed names and working in routine jobs while all the time - gathering information for Russian intelligence.

An 11th suspect disappeared after being freed on bail in Cyprus.
