U.S. President Barack Obama heads to Louisiana Friday to assess BP's efforts to stop the largest oil spill in U.S. history.

The president is expected to be in Louisiana about midday, when he will be briefed by U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen and then make comments to the media.

BP said early Friday it is continuing to pump mud-like fluids into the Gulf of Mexico well in a procedure known as "top kill" to combat the oil flow.

In an interview broadcast on CBS television, BP Chief Executive officer Tony Hayward said they have also pumped rubber and other material into the well in a maneuver known as the "junk shot."

He said it will be about 48 hours before the company can confirm the top kill effort has been successful. If so, BP says it would then use cement to seal the well.

The company has said efforts to contain the leak have so far cost it some $930 million.

President Obama said he takes full responsibility for shutting down the well and cleaning up the spill, and that BP's operations are under federal direction.

An oil rig exploded in the Gulf on April 20, killing 11 workers and rupturing the undersea well.

In response to the oil spill, Mr. Obama said he is extending a ban on new deepwater oil projects for six months to prevent other disasters.  The move will also suspend applications for Arctic oil drilling off the coast of Alaska.
