Two Mosques Attacked in Pakistan, At Least 70 Killed

Pakistani officials say gunmen wearing suicide vests have attacked two mosques belonging to a minority sect in the northeastern city of Lahore, killing at least 70 people and taking several hostages.

Police say gunmen armed with grenades stormed the mosques located in the Garhi Shahu and Model Town areas of the city, shortly after Friday prayers began.

Both mosques are used by members of the Ahmadi sect which has long been subject to discrimination in Pakistan, as well as the occasional target of sectarian attacks.  Pakistan has declared Ahmadis non-Muslims.

Witnesses at both scenes say firefights could still be heard going on between police and the gunmen holed up inside the mosques.  Police say at least one of the attackers was killed.

Officials say they believe several hostages were taken and fear many more were injured.  

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks.

The Ahmadi sect was founded in the 19th century by a man who claimed to be a prophet.

In other violence, police say gunmen in southwest Pakistan shot and killed four police officers Friday before fleeing on motorcycles.

The attack took place in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.
